The PYP provides a commitment to a concept-driven curriculum in order to enable the inquiry approach. Concepts are seen as tools of investigating content. To reinforce conceptual understanding, learners start by identifying their prior knowledge of the concept, and then asking key questions to find out more. Conceptual understanding involves researching, critical thinking and transferring knowledge into new situations as opposed to memorization of facts.

In the PYP there are 8 key concepts through which exploration of content takes place:
